Writing Style:
Let's keep in mind that Facade of Shadows was written by Rick Chiantaretto when he was still in high school technically making this is his debut novel. In my experience most debuts are a bit shaky and tend to be missing something semi-crucial to the plot, with that being said...the writing style in this one took me by a pleasant surprise! I've never seen such complexity from a beginner writer before. The plot has substance with a fully developed beginning, middle, and ending. While some aspects aren't quite prefect, the raw-natural talent is present without a doubt. Chiantaretto's writing demands your attention and will only become better with time! *Trust me, I have also read his second novel Death of the Body, which holds all the proof needed!*

I found it quite amusing that the author put his-self into the story playing one of the most important characters... the Protector, Horus. Rick has one hell of a sense of humor and imagination... that's why I'm such a fan of his. He has the skill to pull on your every emotion and take you on an unforgettable journey.

My opinion:
I was beyond excited when I found out that Facade of Shadow's was being re-released! I have two secret passions in life... anything Egyptian and the paranormal. (Vampires being my favorite) What I adored about this book is how it combined my two favorites together! This is one of the most unique takes on vampires and the Egyptian culture I've ever read. Many Egyptian Gods and Goddess were mentioned throughout the book, each one given a specific task within the plot that goes along with how they are actually represented in Egyptology text. Translations from various actual Egyptian books were also used in the storyline giving this story such a realistic feel!

The plot boils down to the ancient war of good versus evil, the light against the darkness. In order for you to find out which side prevails, you're just going to have to read the book yourself. What ends up happening will shock you; I seriously never expected the outcome. I'm still awe-struck to be honest. Suspense at its finest...until the very last page!

This book has everything I look for in an epic read plus so much more. The action had my heart-pounding, the zaniness of the characters made me laugh out loud, the tragedies brought tears to my eyes, and the romance made me realize that love always finds the light no matter how dark things become.

The characters didn't seem real to me. Although did finish the book because I wanted to see what happened, I was constantly plagued by the questions about why the characters were doing what they were doing. Why did Cassie consider Dominique an enemy, how did Cynthia feel about being replaced as Cassie's friend, and why did Cynthia need to move aside, Rick could have just joined her circle of friends. I think this would be a really good book if the characters were fleshed out a bit. The book jumps from action scene to action scene with no meat in between.
I really loved the concept and the plot.

The characters could use a bit more development. Some were more developed than others, but all were a bit underdeveloped, in my opinion.

This did not stop me from thoroughly enjoying the book! While I felt like I was able to predict the end, there were enough twists that I could never be sure, until I got to the end.

Definitely one I would recommend.
Far from my normal read, I ran across Rick’s debut novel at an author takeover and release party on Facebook. Intrigued by the cover and the story behind the book, I immediately had to read it.

I first have to say, what a ride. Writing this novel while he was still young and in high school, Rick’s writing style rivals even the most experienced writers of today. He captures you and pulls you in so deep; you become part of the tale.

A story about vampires, Egyptian Gods, and even a character modeled after his own persona (I think), you love the complexity of Lucas and Cassi. The tale of good versus evil, with twists and turns you never know what will happen next. This book kept me on my toes. Never knowing quite where I was going to land only added to the suspense building until the very last page. An ending that I never saw coming was fitting for this story.

This book is a super read for anyone, young and old. If you haven’t picked up one of Rick’s books, you should. They are all outstanding.

This is a excellent insight of where this author's mind was and look into his talent earlier on in his career. This might have youth as the main characters but do not know of too many youth that are so responsible or dedicated as these were. To stop evil from winning seems to be the theme with the use of Egyptian mythology and some of their writings as the basis of the storyline mixed with paranormal. Having read his other book it was quite fascinating to see him write with vampires being in the forefront not what I expected so a nice surprise. There is also one character that if I looked closely hummm might see alittle of the author in that character. The flow for being done by someone at a young age already showed the great promise of a writer with the style and format in this novel. The story kept me intrigued so much so that I kept turning the pages not wanting to be interrupted because I had to know what was going to happen next. Since I already had found this author could keep me on my toes with the freshness of his writing what a treasure this one is because I learned it is his natural ability even if he does not think so. To be able to walk on the dark side and travel there taking me the reader with him with a story that most love to read that even back then diamond in the rough is the talent waiting to emerge which it does. He even includes that hint of romance with the desires of love in here for us women who tend to favor the romance in books. To be quite honest would love to see this one continue with Rick getting his heart's desire come to life.
