What is wrong with me? This is a Karen Ranney book and I love Karen Ranney books. I liked the storyline and I liked the characters -- it just seemed to move so very slowly that I found myself skipping chunks of it.

The Duke of Roth has a severely injured leg, causing him to limp, and have chronic pain. He is handsome as sin, a force to be reckoned with, he doesn't give into his pain. He is also a War Officer, and now inventor. The York family, wealthy beyond belief, the father's inventions were famous, that is how he met the Duke. His daughter Martha grew up following her father everywhere, and learning more about inventing, than playing the piano forte, or how to choose a dress. On the other hand, her half sister Josephine, drop dead gorgeous, and the ability to get anything she wanted! Will she get the Duke? I highly recommend today! Thanks! Enjoy!

The novel is a rewarding read with an interesting plot and unique scientific details about torpedo boats. Well written and enjoyable escapism.
Enjoyed this story line. More substance than most tales in this genre. Easy read.
I've never read a book by Karen Ranney that I didn't love! This one did not disappoint me. It has vibrant characters, and a unique plot. Karen is a master at building anticipation. I definitely recommend this one!
So good. I loved this read by Ranney. Love her characters and the storyline. I knew who the villain was and expected problems but oh it turned out well. To well for the bad guys though. They didn't deserve their ending. To good for them.
I love how Karen writes these amazing stories about second sons having to become Duke.
The second sons always have a career they love and their own ambitions. Then tragedy strikes and their world turns upside down.

Jordan had a brilliant military career and his life all planned out. Then his brother, the Duke dies on Italy. Jordan has to take over as the Duke and try to find a way to fix the family finances.
He is an impoverished inventor duke. She is an heiress daughter of an inventor. Dike and dad are friends. When her dad dies he wants Martha to take his inventions to his friend Jordan the duke. Along the way Jordans friend does some unfriendly things and her sister Josephine is a scheming "B"! Lots of love, hate, mystery, undercurrents, etc lace the plot line. A truly great read. Will be on the look out for more by this author!
I love historical romances! I've read a few of this author's earlier books with mixed results. This book was aggravatingly disappointing. It had an intriguing premise - a young woman travels to see a Duke in order to hand over her father's life's work. The heroine, Miss Martha York, should have been more compelling - she was pretty, smart, and mature, but she was too meek. The hero, Jordan Hamilton, Duke of Roth, was more compelling - handsome, aristocratic, and smart. They had ok chemistry. The peripheral characters, the heroine's sister and the duke's friend, were selfish and immoral. I did not enjoy their story at all. The main storyline was the biggest detraction for me; it was ridiculously contrived and predictable. It's too bad because the book had a lot of promise, but overall, not a good book.
