In the mix of these women's lives are the trials and paths that we all must face and decide whether to fold or to continue to hang in there. In the mix of their personalities is the humor and self-deprecation that bonds women together over many years - this is where the group most closely resembles Carrie & Co.
Ruby needs her friends, but more than that, she needs to understand herself, and stop running away from who she really is, stop covering up her insecurities with brittle humor. The best and brightest part of the story is woven through the chapters, as Ruby comes to terms with the fact that she's found love, despite herself. And with the romance comes her ability to see herself as she really is, and to start enjoying what makes her the special person she is. This may be one of the best books ever written about the feeling of falling in love, the vulnerability and the heartache and insecurity. But in spite of all that, "Girls' Poker Night", in spots, will make you laugh out loud, because Ruby really has a way with a story! I read this book many years ago and recommended it to several friends. After giving out my own copy, buying it again and giving out my second copy, I desperately wanted to read it again. So I bought the ebook. It's such a fun I-feel-like-I-haven't-got-my-life-together-surely-there's-someone-out-there-like-me read. It's quick and easy to read. its perfectly spaced for reading when there isn't much time. I will continue to lend out my two paper back copies to girlfriends who may need a pick me up, but thank goodness I have an impossible to lend out copy.
It truly was an awful book. Didn't like the writing and perspective. The jumping around for the rest of the story was not to my liking. It was a waste of time and money.
I purchased this book because I thought it would be somewhat similar to Bridget Jones. Well, its really not. Although I like the writer`s flowing style of writing, this book is as far from a romantic comedy as you can get.
The author intermingles too many things and we end up having difficulty sorting through it all.
I also never felt a deep connection with any of the main characters in this book, especially between the girlfriends.
I enjoyed the book, but basically expected it to be a lot more entertaining. This book was very morose.
This book is poker at it's funniest and most charming. The characters are diverse and interesting. This is a quick, fun read.
This book made me feel as if I was a part of Ruby's journey to work through her past ad figure out her life...I laughed and thought about my own path while accompanying her......well worth the read
As a guy reading this book, I felt like I was being privileged to watch Jill Davis's collection of babes from behind a one way mirror. And don't let anyone tell you that this is just a "girl's book." There may be some guys that get uncomfortable as they read it as they may see themselves in some of the male characters. But this book revolves around Ruby Capote's friends that gather once a week to ostensibly play poker and talk about...what else... their love lives or lack thereof...sexual orientation...aspirations...disappointments...the usual stuff we guys always assumed they talked about when we weren't around.
It's a funny trip, although I thought it got a bit bogged down toward the end with the relationship that she pursues in Ruby-like fashion through most of the book. An excellent first novel by this new author.
I've read this book twice now. I didn't mean to re-read it; I'd forgotten the title and picked it up to escape a disappointing book. But even though I realized I had already read this, I continued because the plot wasn't really the driving force, no urgent need to know what happens. It was how Ruby, the main character, changed over the course of the book that was the point. Witty, not hilarious -- a quiet, good read.
